Spiral Binding Service Opens New Doors for Hammonds
Trade binder and print finisher, Hammonds (a member of The Charlesworth Group) has expanded its services with the addition of a spiral binding
line in order to open up new markets.
The Wakefield based company already offered extensive perfect and case binding services, as well as saddle stitching and other print finishing
such as laminating, and saw spiral binding as a market with potential. The line is now fully operational producing over 25k spiral bound books
a month during busy periods. As the demand for this work increases, further investment is anticipated to complement the existing line.
Managing Director David Boothman said of the investment, "Recognising the demand for spiral bound publications, particularly in the educational sector, we knew that this would be a great opportunity for us to open new doors. It also means that we can offer existing clients wider choice."
One of the largest book binders in the North of England, Hammonds is accredited to both the ISO 9001 Quality standard and the ISO 14001 Environmental standard.

During recent years Hammonds has made significant investment in new plant and equipment at their purpose built premises in Wakefield, ensuring their long-term environmental best practice objectives continue to be met.

The employment of the most efficient equipment, energy saving compressors, automated recycling of waste and finishing options such as recyclable laminate, means that buyers can place orders knowing that products are as environmentally friendly as possible which is increasingly important to the client and end user.
Quality Manager Mel Brooks said, "Careful planning and investment in recent years has resulted in the ISO 14001 Auditors concluding that as a newly accredited company Hammonds' environmental position is 'years ahead' compared to most companies upon receiving the qualification. The initiatives introduced to reduce our carbon footprint throughout the business were crucial to our future proofing strategy. We are delighted to have now achieved both ISO 14001 and the ISO 9001 quality standard."

Hammonds Wins Award for Fine Binding
 At the British Book Design and Production Awards 2004, Hammonds the Bindery division of The Charlesworth Group, took the award for Limited Edition / Fine Binding.
The winning entry 'The Arundel Choirbook', was typeset and printed by Charlesworth and case bound by Hammonds. The Group was specifically selected to produce the entire publication from typesetting and printing through to quarter binding in leather with gold blocking on the spine and cover.
The large format book was described by the judges as "the clear winner" for the category and complimented the Group on their "beautiful" printing as well as the quality of binding.
The book was published by a member of the exclusive Roxburghe Club, as during their lifetime each club member must sponsor a publication of historic significance.
The Charlesworth Group has recently made significant investment in extending and refurbishing existing premises to co-locate printing operations alongside its binding lines creating a leaner, more cost efficient operation.
Hammonds continues to offer commercial binding and finishing services to the printing trade. With more efficient production, capacity for the provision of Hammonds quality perfect and case binding services has been greatly increased.
